My talent comes from my mother, an artist and illustrator who devoted her talents to honoring indigenous peoples until her death. (She is often represented in my work by the turtle; one of her favorite animals.) For many years I did nothing with the gift because of life challenges elsewhere. It wasn't until I returned to Tucson from Northern New Mexico in 1993 that I found ways to utilize this ability in a professional capacity.
The Tucson Botanical Gardens provided the foundation for creative and artistic expression. I presided over eight exhibition gardens there from 1994 to 2004. I tracked and recorded life cycles of hundreds of plants and trees, designed annual plantings and color palettes, and integrated plants that appeal to the senses of touch, smell and even sound. I was invited to give presentations on Mexican-American gardening traditions and sensory gardens, from Flagstaff to Green Valley.
The Gardens gave me an appreciation of local history, regional culture and folk traditions that would begin to influence my expressions through art. I found myself becoming more involved with Tucson's Hispanic community through seminars, classes and personal touches. I began revisiting my many connections to Latino culture throughout my life... Eventually my love of La Cultura and creating digital art began to overtake my love of gardens, and in mid-life I switched careers.
I began the life of a student of Digital Arts at Pima Community College, where I graduated in May of 2009 Phi Theta Kappa, with AAS degrees in Web Design and Multimedia concentrations. La Corua Digital Design began unofficially in 2007 while I was still attending college. The name "La Corua" represents my love of Sonoran history and culture.
For six years, until October 2010, I served as office and media administrator for Pima County Interfaith Council; a broad-based grassroots community organization. During my tenure at PCIC, I established many connections throughout the Metro Tucson Area. By Spring 2010, it became clear that it was time to begin launching La Corua as a legitimate business, using not only my artistic and technical skills, but also my skills in cultural competency, community building and management.
I gravitate to the many talented entities & businesses who are ready to develop stronger digital presences so key to success in the 21st Century. It is my passion-- as artist and entrepreneur, to support, strategies, and facilitate these steps for mutual prosperity and a vibrant community.
